Last May, news broke that after five years, makeup brand Athr Beauty had succumbed to the pressures of self-funding and shut down. Beauty Independent reported the brand has been acquired for an undisclosed amount by Gostrider with plans to relaunch on June 20.WHO: Athr Beauty was founded in 2018 by Tiila Abbitt, a former Senior Director of Product Development at Sephora, based on a commitment to environmental sustainability and socially responsible practices. The brand looked to fill a gap for clean color formulations that delivered the performance of conventional makeup brands with a range of 20 products priced from $20 to $58. Athr Beauty claimed it saved 650,000 packaging components from landfills. At the height of its businesses, the brand was once available in 1,200 doors across retailers like Sephora, Credo, The Detox Market, Free People, Neiman Marcus, Anthropologie, and Douglas.Founded by Audrey Napoleon, Gostrider describes itself as a portfolio that specializes in building beauty brands for the next generation of music artists.IN THEIR OWN WORDS: In an email to Beauty Independent, Napoleon says, “Our strategy to acquire exceptional brands that could benefit from our support and resources began in 2023. We searched for brands with a strong mission, exceptional products and a devoted following…After being introduced to Tiila Abbitt, we found that Athr checked every box, so deciding to acquire it was easy. We are excited to be a part of this special and unique brand, which has the potential to make a real difference in the world. This is what we aim for in all our acquisitions—brands that resonate with their audience and have a positive impact.
